Breast Reduction for Men (Gynecomastia)
Gynecomastia is the presence of abnormal breast tissue beneath the nipple in men. At times it can be minute, and in other cases there is a substantial amount of tissue. However, obese men with significant fatty breast tissue are generally not good candidates for surgery, and should concentrate on weight control.
Plastic surgery to improve gynecomastia involves excising the abnormal glandular breast tissue through an incision around the male areola. It might also entail using power-assisted liposuction to sculpt the surrounding breast tissue to achieve a flatter, more masculine contour. Occasionally excess breast skin needs to be removed.
With any cosmetic procedure, gynecomastia surgery is best done when you are close to your ideal body weight, with plans to maintain it. Additionally, a compressive vest will be prescribed for you to wear for a few weeks post-operatively, which improves the surgical result significantly.
